US Drinking Water Provision Receives a "D" Grade

The American Society of Civil Engineers reports that, “America’s drinking water systems face an annual shortfall of at least $11 billion to replace aging facilities that are near the end of their useful life and to comply with existing and future federal water regulations. This does not account for growth in the demand for drinking water over the next 20 years.

 

Atlanta: Tenants Denied Water in Landlord-City Dispute

In a dramatic battle between tenants, the City of Atlanta, and a landlord, 130 tenants had their water cut-off as the city attempted to collect on overdue water bills. The city contends that the landlord is responsible for nearly more than $400,000 past bills. With tenants caught in the middle, a judge intervened to restore the water; when the city again cut off water to the tenants, a second judge threatened to jail the Atlanta Watershed Management Commissioner. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution quotes a tenant as saying that, "I didn’t know how important water is... Without water, you cannot do anything.”

 

"Natural Gas" Drilling to Increase NYC Water Prices

Writing in Pro Public, Abrahm Lustgarten reports that drilling for natural gas could increase the price of water in New York City by as much as 30% for 9 million residents. Clean up of contaminants released by the drilling could about $10 billion to water treatment costs.
